One of the sport’s finest and a fresh-faced aspiring talent were the ultimate pair to beat on Saturday, March 18th in Paris as Sweden’s Petronella Andersson and Germany’s Christian Ahlmann won the €100,000 Le Saut Hermès team event at the Saut Hèrmes CSI5*.
One of the highlights of the second day of competition in France, the 1.60m class designed by Frank Rothenberger, saw a field of 20 riders, novice and veteran alike, who previously qualified on Friday form teams in pairs of one male and one female.
The winning combination of Ahlmann and Andersson jumped through the first round fault-free but when Andersson and the 9-year-old BWP gelding Ivoor van T Paradijs (Quadrillo X Indoctro) had a single knockdown on course, Ahlmann knew that he and the 14-year-old DSP gelding Colorit (Coriano X Capitol) had to be fast but more importantly, ride clear. The team finished on a total score of 4 faults in 79.98 seconds being the only team to finish under 80 seconds.
“We are really, really happy; we didn’t expect to win,” Ahlmann commented. “We had to wait until the very last riders completed their round. We never imagined Rolf-Göran Bengtsson would make a mistake. It’s a really fantastic win!”
Similar to her teammate, 25-year-old, Andersson was also thrilled with the Saturday’s result.
“It was such an exciting class,” said an exuberant Andersson. “I am so happy to be here and to have been teamed with such a great show-jumper as Christian! I already loved this competition, having previously taken part in the class for riders under 25, but this is just amazing!”
Finland’s Juulia Jyläs and the 9-year-old Zangersheide mare Courage T Z (Calvino Z X Espri) had a rail in the first round but her teammate Belgium’s Olivier Philippaerts and his 11-year-old DSP mare H&M Legend Of Love (Landzauber X Corgraf) rode two clear rounds to finish in 2nd place in a total score of 4 faults in 84.43 seconds.
Third place went to the team formed by France’s Margaux Bost aboard the 11-year-old SBS stallion As de Papignies (Kashmir Van Schuttershof X Ahorn Z) and Germany’s Daniel Deusser aboard the 14-year-old BWP gelding Clintop 2 (Clinton I X Calvaro Z) with a total score of 4 faults in 86.51 seconds.
France’s Penelope Leprevost and Sweden’s Rolf-Göran Bentsson finished in 4th place riding the 12-year-old Selle Français mare Ratia d’la Rousserie (Quaprice Bois Margot X Apache d’Adriers) and the 14-year-old Holsteiner stallion Clarimo ASK (Clearway X Caletto II) respectively in a total score of 4 points in 89.88 seconds while 5th place went to Great Britain’s Louise Saywell riding the 11-year-ld Holsteiner gelding Cordalis 7 (Casado X Landlord) and Canada’s Ben Asselin aboard the 9-year-old RHEIN Cool Feeling (Cornado X Lancer II) in a score of 5 points in 93.82 seconds.
The final day of competition at the Saut Hermès CSI5* culminates with the Grand Prix Hermès Sunday at 3:30pm local time.
