Daniel Neilson is one of the rising stars of British Showjumping. Following a successful junior career, he is now establishing himself at senior level as well as joining the British Show Jumping World Class Development Programme for 2013 -2015.
Daniel rode the round of his life on Varo M last week in his first-ever Longines World Cup Grand Prix. The 23 year-old took third place as the best performing British rider of the Grand Prix ahead of Britain’s superstars Scott Brash and Ben Maher.
Referred to by the British Media as the ‘Billy Elliot of showjumping’, Dan earned an invitation to the next World Cup qualifier with a chance of making the World Cup Finals in Lyon, France in April.
It was my first time to be able to ride in the internationals at Olympia. Qualifying for the internationals at Olympia has been a goal of mine for as long as I can remember, this year I had a great team behind me, helping me achieve this goal.
Olympia is a special venue, being held in London so close to Christmas. There is a great buzz around the show! We spend most of the season jumping in Europe so to ride in front of my home crowd was great, they really get behind their home riders, willing you to do well.
I started riding for a new yard; Aspen stables at the beginning of this season. In partner ship with now my girlfriend Stacy and her father Terry Willsone, we set out to buy a new team of horses and run a professional stable.
British show jumping is at an all time high and to be a part of that certainly gives me a boost and drive to push myself to achieve the most I can in the sport.
I was lucky enough to win the ‘Under 23’ Young Riders in Olympia on Varo in 2011 so to take him back for the World Cup this year was amazing!
Too be the highest place British rider in the World Cup, finishing 3rd was a very proud moment for me! Varo has jumped very consistently all year, being placed in numerous international Grand Prix events. We certainly ended the year on a high, with this event being one of my greatest senior results so far.
Everyone at Aspen Stables is really looking forward too 2014, thank you too all my supporters, sponsors and owners for your help and support throughout this year.
