After yesterday’s vet check, riders and horses were ready for the first round of the P.S.I. FEI European Championship. 19 nations were on the starting list and Ireland was first to go, followed by Switzerland with reigning Olympic champion Steve Guerdat on Nino des Buissonnets as anchor man. In the first half of the competition we saw nations like Great Britain, Germany and the Netherlands, all considered to be among the favorites in the fight for the medals this week.

The British team can count two out of the four riders who helped secure British gold at the Olympics last summer in London; Scott Brash and Ben Maher. The German team has been unfortunate in the timing leading up to the championships with injured horses, and have had to call in their reserve riders, but with the depth that Germany can call on, with reserves like Ludger Beerbaum and Marcus Ehning, the team is still considered to be among the teams to watch out for.

But it was Britain’s Olympic gold medalist and recent winner of the Longines Global Champions Tour Grand Prix in London, Ben Maher, who dazzled the Danish today with a brilliant clear round with Jane Clark’s Cella. This team are proving once again to be a match made in heaven and everyone in the sport, Ben included, are thanking Jane Clark, previous President of the United States Equestrian Federation, for the incredible foresight to bring these two together.

It seems that there is nothing Ben and Cella can’t handle together and today was proof. Great Britain starts things off well with this fantastic win. Reigning Olympic champions Steve Guerdat and Nino des Buissonnets came through near the end of the class with a truly impressive round. Showing that despite this year’s small hiccups here and there, these two, who finished second in April’s FEI Rolex World Cup Finals, are back in form in a big way so watch out. When Steve and Nino are in form, they prove to be rather unbeatable.

Frenchman Roger-Yves Bost, loved both within France and outside of it, finished in third with Georgina Forbes’ Castle Forbes Myrtille Paulois. Portugal’s Luciana Diniz impressed with her stallion Winningmood, landing in fourth position while France’s star partnership, Kevin Staut and Silvana HDC came through to finish in fifth position. Sweden insured two riders in the top eight, with Jens Fredricson and defending champion Rolf-Goran Bengtsson finishing in sixth and seventh respectively.

Team standings after today’s results; France in first, Great Britain in second and Switzerland in third.

A truly outstanding start to a long and exciting week of competition for everyone in Herning, Denmark for the 2013 European Championships. Let the battle begin!!
