fter winning the Sires of the World aboard Rieseling Monselet (Kashmir van’t Schuttershof) 2012 Belgian Olympian Gregory Wathelet won his first Belgian Championship with his young 8 year old prodigy, Sea Coast Forlap DC (Querlybet Hero). Just ahead of Belgian’s man of the hour, Pieter Devos on Dream of India Greenfield, who won the 2013 CN International Grand Prix at Spruce Meadows only weeks ago.
Gregory’s Sires of the World win occured on Riesling du Monselet. The prestigious FEI Zangersheide Sires of the World title came after a very fast jump-off. Fifty-six approved stallions lined up in the class but only eleven of them were clear in the first round to qualify for the jump-off. Junior rider Guido Klatte impressed his older competitors by managing to qualify two horses.
Gregory was 0.27 seconds faster than second place finisher Tim Rieskamp-Goedeking with Quartz (Quality Touch Z x Zandigo). Third place went to previous World number one Christian Ahlmann and the 10 year old Asca Z (Askari x Carthago Z), fresh off their visit to the 2013 Spruce Meadows Masters. Fourth place to Germany’s Marc Bettinger with Quannan R (Kannan x A Lucky One).
Another wonderful year in Lanaken as the biggest titles in Belgian show jumping went to the talented and charming Gregory Wathelet. Having recently parted ways with his major sponsor and owner from the 2012 Olympic Games in London, Citzenguard, these two wins come at a perfect time.
Big Congratulations to Gregory and his team on two fantastic wins!
