Over 30,000 spectators made their way to the Spruce Meadows ‘Masters’ tournament in Alberta, Canada to witness the fan favorite ATCO 6 Bar event. Since 2014, no rider had been able to jump beyond two meters, which all changed on Friday, September 8, 2017. In an electrifying performance, Brazil’s Pedro Junqueira Muylaert and Italy’s Juan Carlos Garcia ended the night with a tied, 2.03m finish.

This win marks Garcia’s second ‘Masters’ victory of the week. On the opening day of the tournament, Garcia and the Belgian Warmblood stallion Gitano V Berkenbroeck finished 1st in the Akita Drilling Cup. In Friday’s event, the Italian took up the ride on the 14-year-old Holsteiner stallion Cocodrillo. “I chose this horse to compete in the 6 Bar because he has all the scope. I had ridden him in these events before and he once again showed his great talent.”

For Muylaert, this was only his second time competing in a 6 Bar competition and the first time competing in the event aboard the 10-year-old Oldenburg gelding Chacote. “The atmosphere and the incredible crowed really push you through this competition, and they helped to give me the motivation to get through to the end. I had never jumped to this height before [2.03m] but I regularly work on gymnastic exercises to prepare for any big tournament and he’s great with them.”

Reaching a height of 1.78m to carry on to the fourth round was 3rd place finishers Paolo Paini of Italy and Russia’s Vladimir Tuganov. With the final fence of the round four series set at 1.88m, both Paini and Tuganov were unable to match the efforts of Muylaert and Garcia, ending on a four-fault finish.
