It was France’s leading lady, Penelope Leprevost and Eric Lamaze, Canada’s 2008 Olympic gold medallist, who battled it out for the fourth international test of the 2013 Spruce Meadows Masters. 40 international combinations came together to compete in the 1.60 competition held in the amazing international arena in Calgary, Alberta.

All-star international combinations were out in full-form, including current world number one Ben Maher and Jane Clark’s Cella, Michael Whitaker and his Aachen winning mount Amai, Lauren Hough and the lovely Quick Study as well as last year’s ultimate winning combination, Olivier Philippaerts and Cabrio van de Heffinck.

But it was only five combinations that would jump off for the $125,000 purse including reigning Olympic champion Steve Guerdat. Penelope Leprevost, Eric Lamaze, Beezie Madden, Ben Maher and Steve Guerdat made up the incredibly impressive jump off collection which left France’s leading lady the victor with a quick time of 43.78 seconds aboard 10 year old grey Belgian-bred mare Dame Blanche van Arenberg. Eric Lamaze and the talented Powerplay finished in second place.

Eric recently purchased the 9 year old Holsteiner gelding with Andrew and Carlene Ziegler’s Artisan Farms as an unexpected acquisition that is turning out to be a very exciting turn around for Canada and the world’s previous number one ranked rider. Originally ridden by Switzerland’s Pius Schwizer, Powerplay is certainly turning out to be one of Eric’s next international superstars.

Ben Maher, who was crowned number one ranked rider in the world while in Calgary his week for the Spruce Meadows Masters, finished in third place with the amazing Cella. Cella, a mare he only recently got together with, this year, as a partnership evolved between the 2012 Olympic gold medallist and previous USEF President Jane Clark. This exciting combination may have had four faults in the jump off but you can be sure to not count them out for Sunday’s exciting $1 Million CN International Grand Prix.
