Rolf-Goran Bengtsson wins Longines Grand Prix in Lyon…

After Oslo and Helsinki, Lyon is the third stage on the Longines FEI World CupTM Jumping circuit for the Western European League. Friday was the setting for the Longines Grand Prix, a qualifying trial for the prestigious World Cup Grand Prix on Sunday.
Created in 1978, the FEI World Cup circuit has been visiting Equita since 2009. For this major international event, 7 of the world’s Top 10 riders have made the trip to Lyon to try and earn valuable points in view of reaching the Final in Las Vegas next April.
The French rider Pénélope Leprevost, team silver medallist at the World Championships, had the tricky task of opening proceedings for this trial. On Vagabond de la Pomme, she rode a clear round, setting the example for those to follow. Out of the 48 starters, 19 couples managed to qualify for the jump-off.
The 2011 European Champion, Rolf-Göran Bengtsson put in an amazing time on his faithful companion Casall Ask. Re-controlling his horse strongly on the approach to the 5th vertical, the Swedish rider managed to gain a fraction of time and take first place in this trial which counts for the Longines Ranking. After him, no couple managed to improve on the time. Having been unlucky at the World championships, just missing out on the podium in the individual event, Rolf-Göran Bengtsson and Casall Ask made a winning return at Equita. Billy Twomey (IRL) and Diaghilev finished second, with Simon Delestre (FRA) and Ryan des Hayettes in third place.
“My horse was fantastic, really fantastic. Ryan is exceptional, both in terms of his size and his power. He is only 9 but he has already made some great performances, such as the World Cup in Göteborg” said Simon Delestre, the best performing French rider. “He is really special in terms of his quality, and his mentality; as you saw with the second to last obstacle, the stride was really short, but I trusted him and it worked. Tomorrow, he will be competing in the Equita Masters presented by Equidia Life, and Qlassic Bois Margot, who made two clear rounds in the trial this morning, will be starting the World Cup Grand Prix on Sunday.”
